Tour De Cure Update 2018

As a surgical registrar in Germany, Dr Anne-Sophie Mehdorn sees the impacts of cancer on patients and their families every day.

But cycling, sport and the great outdoors have proved helpful in managing her work.

“I've only recently taken up cycling, but I've found riding and other sports are important for my life-balance as it gives me time to myself and an opportunity to step away from the difficult, and often sad, times working with cancer patients,” Anne-Sophie says.

To help understand “more pieces of the big cancer puzzle”, Anne-Sophie is spending a year at the Flinders Centre for Innovation in Cancer focusing on colorectal cancer research.

Over the next two days she’ll be doing even more to help provide a brighter future for people with cancer by raising funds for cancer research by riding 200km from Glenelg to Langhorne Creek as part of the Tour De Cure SA Country Tour.

Through its many cycling events, Tour de Cure has raised more than $35 million for cancer projects over the past 11 years. Part funds from this event will go towards a major cancer research project at the Flinders Centre for Innovation in Cancer.

For Anne-Sophie, Tour de Cure is a perfect opportunity to support cancer research while taking in the sights of South Australia:

“Speaking with patients and their families and seeing the impacts of cancer on them personally, that’s always the hardest thing.

“South Australia is so beautiful and I’m looking forward to enjoying the view from the bike while raising awareness and funds for cancer research here at Flinders.”

Despite not having a large network of family and friends in Australia, Anne-Sophie has been enthusiastically fundraising for Tour de Cure and her tally is climbing.
