$225,000 and a new world record!
Mix102.3 Breakfast duo Jodie & Soda’s mammoth 52-hour ferris wheel marathon, and the generosity of South Australians, has raised more than $225,000 to build a new cancer wellness centre at Flinders.
Climbing aboard the ferris wheel in the Garden of Unearthly delights during the Adelaide Fringe, Jodie & Soda were tasked with staying on the wheel for 52-hours without sleeping.
It was all part of one very important mission – to raise much needed funds to build a new cancer wellness centre in the Flinders Centre for Innovation in Cancer to provide more support for people and their families affected by cancer.
Named Jodie & Soda’s Biggest Rescue Ever – Kerry’s Final Wish, the challenge was in memory of Kerry Briggs who sadly lost her life to cancer in 2016 after a five-year battle.
Leaving her husband and two young children behind, it was Kerry’s wish that cancer patients just like her be provided with more emotional, financial and practical support to help them overcome the many effects which cancer can have on them and their families.
More than 2500 people are diagnosed with cancer at Flinders each year, and more than 30,000 patients and their families come through the doors for treatment and appointments. For many, the transition to life with cancer, and to life after cancer, can be incredibly challenging.
Amazingly the South Australian community rallied together to surpass the $200,000 fundraising target needed to ensure the wellness centre can open in October 2019.
From major corporate partners, to the people who gave up their time, and those who threw a few coins in the bucket…your generous support was overwhelming. Thank you!
And while Jody sadly had to leave the ferris wheel early after feeling unwell, Soda battled on with Jodie cheering him on from the ground below. Eventually, after 52 hours, he was crowned the new Guinness World Record holder for the longest time spent on a fairground ride.
Our heartfelt thanks to Jodie & Soda, the whole team at Mix102.3, and all the generous businesses and individuals who made this possible.
