About Flinders Foundation

Supporting medical research and patient care

Flinders Foundation is dedicated to supporting medical research and patient care across the Flinders medical precinct.

Established in 1976 as The Flinders Medical Centre Research Foundation – a group of dedicated doctors and administrators saw the need for a foundation to “… advance the practice and science of medicine in the widest sense” and support research work “without which advances in patient care cannot occur…”

This remains true today.

In the decades since, the name may have changed, but Flinders Foundation has continued to build a formidable partnership with South Australia’s 700-bed major tertiary hospital, Flinders Medical Centre, the Southern Adelaide Local Health Network, and the prestigious Flinders University. This partnership approach across the Flinders medical precinct ensures funding supports some of the most talented, innovative and skilled clinicians and researchers in the world who are working tirelessly across a range of illnesses and disease.

Alan Young AM has been Chair of Flinders Foundation since 1997. With his long term support and unwavering passion, Flinders Foundation is now one of the leading medical health and research charities in South Australia – raising important funds for medical research and patient care.

Among the Foundation's key achievements is construction of the $30 million state-of-the-art Flinders Centre for Innovation in Cancer which opened in 2012 and houses world-class research, compassionate care and complementary services under the one roof.

Flinders Foundation is generously supported by the community and corporate partners who, in 2016/17 alone, enabled Flinders Foundation to provide over $1.24 million in funding to help search for answers, make medical breakthroughs, and ensure staff are equipped with the latest technology and equipment, in the best environment to care for patients and their families.

Together we've played a vital role in helping to advance the health of our community, as well as those across the globe. But there's plenty more to be done.
